Roz Merrick

Counsellor, MBACP

Roz is a humanistic, integrative counsellor, which simply means that she is trained in different counselling techniques and tailors her approach to suit her clients’ needs. She offers counselling to adults and adolescents and is a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Having trained later in life and having had both short and long-term counselling herself, Roz believes that counselling can be a safe place in which to explore issues past or present that impact our behaviour and affect the way we think and feel.

Roz’s speciality lies in offering counselling to young people from the age of 13 and up. She started working in schools in 2007 in a student services/wellbeing capacity and was part of the child protection and pastoral team. She saw daily the many difficulties that young people faced — anxiety and panic attacks, self-harm and body image issues, peer pressure, questions around gender identity and sexuality, bullying via social media, suicide attempts, and neurodiversity and decided to study listening skills to enhance the care she could offer the young people. It was around this time that she completed a mental health in adults course, followed by a mental health in children course.

Continuing her counselling journey, Roz was delighted to be offered a volunteer placement as a counsellor at the counselling charity ‘As You Are’ in Southwick, where she worked for three years. Here she worked extensively with adults who had a variety of complex presenting issues.

Roz is currently a mental health mentor working one-to-one with students at university. Prior to that, she was a volunteer counsellor at Acorn Pregnancy Counselling Service, Worthing, providing grief work to individuals following pregnancy loss (abortion and miscarriage). Her other counselling roles have included working for YMCA Dialogue and in schools, sixth form, and college.

It can be daunting to seek help and talk to a stranger. If you have any questions about counselling, the way Roz works, or about your own issues she offers a free 30-minute telephone consultation before you decide whether you would like an initial session. Please email or leave a voicemail, suggesting the best times you can be reached, and Roz will call you back, usually within 24 hours. There is no commitment to work together following this.
