Craniosacral Therapy

  • Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy was developed by Dr John Upledger, an osteopathic physician.

It is a form of bodywork – a gentle subtle hands-on therapy.

CST helps to release tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction thus improving whole body function. It supports the body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself.

The craniosacral system consists of the cranium, spine and sacrum which are connected by a continuous membrane of connective tissue deep inside the body called the dura matar. The dura matar also encloses the brain and central nervous system.

Treatment takes place on a massage table fully clothed. Patients may feel a deep sense of relaxation during a session, perhaps some heat or tingling. Everybody is different so the effects afterwards may also differ. You may feel a sense of calmness, energised or mild discomfort which is temporary as the body is adjusting to the changes; this is also part of the natural healing process.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

Our bodies, mind and soul are doing the very best they can to look after and support us and on the whole they do it extremely well! However, life brings many experiences and some experiences, accidents, illness, loss etc. can be too overwhelming or traumatic for us to deal with at the time. When this happens our systems are specially designed to adapt, in order to survive, and we literally ‘hold’ ourselves together until such time as we have the energy, resources and/or wherewithal to process them.

In our busy lives we often prefer to ignore or bury these difficult experiences and subsequently the adaptive holding patterns become our new way of being. It’s only when these energy-sapping strategic holding patterns start to pile up and impact our lives emotionally, physically or mentally, do we begin to accept that our health, and ultimately our spiritual self is suffering and needs help.

BCST offers a way of being held/touched that encourages feelings of comfort and safety, which invites our systems to slow down, take a breath and just be and to reconnect with who we truly are. As we become more in touch with ourselves, these adaptive patterns are brought into our conscious awareness in a safe and held space, so they can be processed, integrated and held in a less energy-consuming way, allowing our system to reorganise and come into balance. We experience clarity, insight and change.

BCST is a gentle, touched-based therapy but touch can evoke strong reactions, so each session proceeds with care and consideration to your needs. The aim of BCST is to offer the best possible opportunity and support for your own innate healing abilities, so every care is taken to make you feel safe and comfortable. At any time during a session, we can pause, have a break or stop.
