Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a clinically proven treatment for many difficulties including Anxiety, Depression, Panic, Phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). CBT is recommended in the National Institute for health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines as the treatment of choice for these difficulties.

The treatment works by helping the client to make gradual changes to thoughts or behaviours which have been identified as problematic and keep the difficulty going. In CBT, it is believed that difficulties arise from exaggerated versions of otherwise normal cognitive and behavioural processes. This supports the idea that psychological difficulties can happen to anyone, as they are just at one end of a line of what is classed as the normal or average experience. Whilst a CBT assessment will refer to past experiences to discover what has led up to the present situation, it is the here and now that is worked with in order to help the client to make effective changes in order to reach identified treatment goals.

CBT is available for adults and children alike, and the treatment itself is tailored specifically toward the age and need of the individual. Goals are set and agreed together between client and therapist and reviewed regularly to ensure that the treatment is progressing as desired by the client. Most importantly, the whole treatment process is collaborative, with client and therapist working together toward agreed goals.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is the recommended treatment for people with Emotional Intensity Disorder. Whilst some services within the NHS have now started to deliver a similar program called STEPPS, DBT remains the most effective due to its informal treatment format and emphasis on 4 specific modules designed to reduce emotional intensity.

The 4 modules comprise mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Problem situations are investigated by client and therapist using a chain analysis of events to work out triggers and suitable points to beneficially intervene with one of the strategies. Mindfulness is the foundation module which underpins all of the other interventions, and must be practiced regularly with therapist support for maximum treatment effectiveness. The therapist guides the client through the skills, steering and coaching them through difficulties using these newly acquired skills.

During the course of treatment, the therapist helps the client to achieve a more balanced view of the world and themselves which impacts on managing emotions and reducing distress. The aim of the treatment is to guide clients along a continuum toward a greater sense of coping and effectiveness.

The techniques used are applicable to anyone who experiences intense and rapidly fluctuating emotion.
